Have the same issue on 2001 Escape with 107K miles. This is what I've done but 351 remains.
1. Changed plugs
2. Swapped #1 coil into #5 cylinder code remained on #1
3. Followed JE procedure listed here. Hello, i have a 2001 Mercury Sable 3.0. Compute... - JustAnswer
I couldn't tell a blinking lamp at a bad or good coil connector. I did try this at the pcm connector pin 26 #1 wouldn't blink but did see it slightly pin 1 for #4. I then went on to JE6 OK, JE7 OK, JE8 OK, JE9 No So procedure states replace PCM.
4. Called dealer but they state shouldn't be PCM. I can bring it in $80 diagnostic fee.
Stumped don't know if I should bite the bullet and get a 2nd observation from the dealer or just go get a reman PCM?
Had to take it to the dealer they did the same tests even though I told them what I had done. Long story short they replaced the PCM and it runs like a champ now.

Reason: update
Friday AM my 2001 Ford Escape w/86,000 miles felt like it was beginning to stall and the emissions yellow light came on -- so I took it to nearest Ford dealer (I was out of town on business) --they replaced #6 coil and boot assembly and 1 spark plug; they also pronounced "carbon build up in intake" and performed "add intake decarb kit--intake cleaner" as well as performing a Fuel system flush - induction kit. Rationale: to keep the other coils from going bad also & problem repeating itself. Grand total: $566.48 I asked about a tune-up but that didn't seem to be an issue.... Runs fine now...200 miles & 1 day later....
--Since that time, I have had Ignition Coil #4 & Plug replaced (2/11/09 at 93,895 mi.), Ignition Coil #5 & the rest of the plugs replaced and 6 gaskets (???) (1/18/10 at 104,699 mi.), regular "works" service, plus a trans flush/fill at 90,892 mi. I asked if there was ever going to be a recall of these Ignition Coils and he (service rep at dealer) told me to keep my receipts. HOWEVER, I am still idling poor on startup (not that bad but noticeable--not dying) similar to when the weather was cold (but only on first startup of day now that the weather is warm), PLUS I have noticed that my RPMs go up and down while driving at speeds ranging from 25-50 in in-town traffic situations. I'm taking SUV in next Wed PM and leaving it overnight for a checkup. Fuel system? Transmission system? I asked them to check both. I'd really like to prevent my transmission from going out. Otherwise, love my Fords. I'm at 108,319 mi. now and looking forward to getting a lot more miles out of this vehicle. Any suggestions on other things to look for?

I found this under the Catalytic Converter forum this AM. Maybe this is my problem? Something to look forward to anyway, right?
2001 Escape 3.0L, 6 Cyl. 115K miles. Three of the ignition coils failed, which dumped gas into the catalyticconverter. There was a bang and the EGR valve now had a hole about the size of a dime in the side. The mechanic said he'd never seen anything like it. The front converters cooked and sent all kinds of pieces back into the other converter and plugged it. Replaced the rear converter and it runs OK. I did not have the $2500.00 Ford wanted for the work.
I got the P0351 on my girlfriends 2001 Escape. When looking at the face of the main wiring harness PCM connector, what pins are for the #1 coil? Anyone know? I would like to test the wire.
I"m having very similar issues as all of the above. Code is p0351. In an effort to fix the issue I've maybe gone overboard, but the problem still exists. The check engine light comes on, and the car misfires and rough very rough. This past summer it ran worse in real hot and humid weather.
Here's what I have done:
New MAF Sensor
New IAC Control Valve
New PCV Valve
All Plugs brand new
Upper and Lower intake gaskets - new (old ones in good shape but did it anyway)
New Coil on #1
Cleaned EGR Valve
Visual check of wires to PCM and at coil as best that I could - no issues noticed
New PCM (only thing done at Ford dealer, I provided new PCM and saved $500) - check engine light still on, now the dealer is doing a diag and checking wires...
Is there an end in sight? Has anyone else come up with a fix for this code? I love the Escape...when it runs the way it should. Thanks Ford.
