Steering box

The steering box on my 1956 F100 leaks. I have new seals for it, but I'm not sure how difficult it is to install them. I have not yet removed the Pitman arm, but let me aks this: When I remove the Pitman arm, can I install the new seals without unbolting the steering box from the frame. That is, can I install a new seal on the shaft with the steering box still attached to the frame. Or do I have to unbolt the steering box. In that case, can I unbolt the steering column at the dash and the steering box at the frame and have enough room to install the new seals. Thanks for your help. OBTW, I got my newly rebuilt oil pump and a non-Load-O-Matic distributor installed this past weekend.

Remove the pitman arm, unbolt the drop from the dash, the box from the frame, and the cover from the floor and you can remove the whole thing thru the cab and put it on the workbench to work on it. you may want to at least open the box, flush out the 50 years of hardened gunk, inspect the internals for wear and damage, and put fresh lube in it while it's out.

I agree with ax on this, and by opening the box up you can inspect the gears for any obvious damage or wear.
