Remote Start

I am getting ready to purchase a remote start for my 2005 F-250 6.0. I was planning on getting the Viper and had a couple of questions. What should I set the delay time to? While I live in the Midwest, it does get down into the single digits every so often (most of that time the truck is plugged in at night). What should the crank time be set to? Turbo saver time? Anything I am missing?

Thanks for the help.

Oh my goodness, a 5 minute cool down time?

I live on a rural 55mph highway, and need to drop right off into the driveway from that speed. I idle to the parking spot. Then according to my EGT guage set, it only takes a minute or once in a while 90 seconds to drop from 450* to 350* at warm idle. (that's from 710* at highway speeds)

With the stock exhaust, it did take +-30 seconds longer. But I would think that 5 minute cool down is a waste of fuel. During hot weather, towing, then maybe, but I don't think you need it if you're running Delo or Rotella oil.

I don't have a remote start YET, but I would think that a 25 second delay should be fine in most climates. Crank time, not more than 4 seconds. I would see how she performs with it set at a two second crank time and adjust from there.

-Just my opinion... Everybody's got one.

25 second start delay? Why? 10 seconds is plenty. You're just trying to give it time for the glow plug light to go out. Crank time needs to be adjusted one or two positions longer. I think they go in .2 increments and default is like 1.0 seconds. 4 seconds and you'll lose your starter and flywheel after a while. It's more like 1.4 seconds I believe. I can't remember for sure. If you go to a good installer, they should know. Don't go to a bargain basement to have it installed whatever you do. You will regret it. You'll get a rats nest for wiring. You'll more than likely need an external delay timer depending on the model.

Isn't the crank time a 'maximum' setting? If it starts before that, then the Bendix spring disengages the starter drive gear from the ring gear. Isn't there a signal to tell the remote start to also stop the start signal once the engine started?

My Glow light is 15 seconds. In Winter I go another 10 seconds if it's cold out or I didn't use the block heater. I think 25 seconds, for remote start, would be a good 'year round, whatever climate' setting.

-Especially if you're not sitting there doing it.

I've heard about this 'external delay timer'. What's that all about. Just buying the remote kit isn't good enough?

I'm going to have one installed later this year on my PSD with ZF6spd. I guess I'll have to 'arm' it when I leave the truck, being sure the transmission is out of gear.

I believe the crank time on the remote starts is actual crank time. You might be right about the disengagment though. As far as the delay timer goes... Some brands have that integrated or they are able to trigger off the glow plug light. I think you'll be ok and not need it. I think they can get to your light wire. In my 05 I guess it's really integrated into the gauge cluster. Good luck with the 6 speed. You're a braver man than I! I think I'd put in an extra relay that verifies you're in neutral if you can.

I know viper alarm systems have a auto start function on them. With that they have a glow plug light tap, that will not allow the truck to start until that light goes out. I think that would be better, instead of assuming that after 10 sec that the plugs are hot. just a thought.

Oooh.. I like that feature. That'll be something I keep an eye out for when I start looking for a remote start system. I have the advanced security group for the truck, so I don't know that I'm going to go for a pricey alarm system. All I want is the remote start.

And if anyone knows if there's a switch in my ZF6spd that signals whether it's in gear or not, (preferably neutral), that information would be helpful to me. There's got to be something, for the reverse light signal.... I know for the remote install for the ZF6 that the clutch safety switch needs to be bypassed. It sure would be nice to make sure the transmission is in neutral before starting.
