The last week here it finally feels like winter in Northern Minnesota. Daytime temps are -10 to -18 and dip to -30 at night. I'm having issues getting my truck to start. It's never failed me on warm days when it is -5 or higher, but below that it is a crapshoot. If I have the block heater plugged in, there are no problems, but when I go somewhere that doesn't have plug-ins I have been stranded even when it was -7.
You guys know of anything to check in particular that would help? I'll try to get codes tomorrow, the PCM will be full of misfire codes since I havn't been able to start it the last 4 times I tried. I had to get pulled home by a freind this afternoon.
I pretty much have to remidy this situation or try and sell the truck to get something newer, probably a 99+ GM 1/2 ton 5.3 or a 5.4 Superduty.
Hey nate, Does your truck crank but not fire? Or will it not crank? I have seen a few vehicles exhibit similar symptoms that were eventually traced to the module or PCM.My experience is not limited to Fords. The first 1 was on a U.S. Postal truck about 25 years ago.Below 5 degrees or so it would not fire unless the ignition module was warmed with a heat gun.Replacing the module fixed it.After that whenever I get a vehicle with those symptoms I try warming the module. It has helped to repair a few since.Hope this helps.
Yeah, my '95 sounded like a pig trying to start today. Temp was somewhere between 0-2. On a side note, whenever you pulled the codes, what did you find? Mine was throwing the check engine light this morning and said bad EGR, and something about TOT (mechanic didn't get to trace it, but said it was something with transmission). We chalked the codes up to the cold weather, and the fact that's it's been sitting for a couple days.
Do you have access to a scan tool? If you can, try to read the codes when it won't start. If it won't communicate with the scan tool it's not going to fire the plugs.Something else to try is checking the fuel pressure when it won't start.
