cut it off?

What, if any, is the benefit of cutting off the "bowl" on the underside of the air cleaner lid? I am also wanting to run an intake similiar to Dave's, from the grill to the air cleaner. I am going to attempt to get more air into my motor, as I am going turn up my pump a flat.

Some say it's about as performance enhancing as wiping bug chit of the windshield, others say hang on baby were Zooooomin now......... personally a better free flowing exhaust would be more advantageous.

If you run a ram air, you will want it gone.
Actually you want to remove as many restrictions as you can from the intake and exhaust, diesels like lots of air.

I can't say that I noticed any real change when I cut mine out. Still, I'm not sorry I did it.

I know you really shouldn't, but i have driven the truck with the air cleaner off just to see. It was a noticeable improvement. If my truck runs that good when I do my ram air and bowl removal, then I am there. Now I just can't wait to get the pyrometer to play with the pump. What temp is too high? I mean do you romp on it and watch the temp? I want to make it run good as in efficient, not (obviously) melting the pistons or anything. So- install the gauge, run it for a while and see where the temps ride, turn up 1/2 flat and see what the temp does?

If you install the thermocouple in the exhaust manifold, 1150 is temp for very long.
I would even try to keep it under 1100 if I were pulling a big long hill like the Rockies.

Pistons start to melt at 1250, which does not mean instant failure at 1250.
The oil jets on the bottom of the pistons do absorb a lot of heat, but it is transfering the heat into the oil.

Soup bowl gone gives unrestricted air at the intake screen, otherwise it looks to me like the bottom of the soup bowl blocks out all but the outer 1" of the screen from free flowing air. The real restriction in the system is the location an size of the plastic snorkel and duct set up, thats why I built my own, with ram air re- directed from behind the grill to up under the hood at the air inlet. I have measured the performance benifit with a water manometer, and have achieved about 3 times the air pressure available to my N/A engine at the air inlet. See my Gallery "lots of suck no blow", refering to the fact I do not have a turbo, but am still getting lots of air into my engine.

So here's the plan. I am going to cut the bowl out, and make an air duct similar to dave's in his pics. Then I'll get the pyro, and since I have the dual exhaust, I can start playing with my pump. I will have made the engine breathe A LOT better and I will have the means to monitor the temps. Does this sound feasonable to you fellas?
