Got up this morning to single digit temps - 8ºF, to be exact. Bitter cold and windy. My curiosity got the better of me last night and I didn't plug in the engine block heater (I just had to know). I cranked it 4 times and it fired briefly twice. So I let it sit for about 10 minutes and tried again, and that time it fired right up. It revved up for a second (on all 8 cylinders, even, no misses) because of the excess fuel. Other than the initial burst of smoke when it started, it ran pretty clean.
So my curiosity is satisfied, compression must be pretty good on all 8 cylinders and at temps below 10-15ºF, I'm probably pushing my luck to get it started without causing a great deal of strain on the starter. I usually plug in when the forecast is for below 20 which seems like a good number given today's exercise, and I'll be continuing that from now on. But it's nice to know that after 247,000 miles she's still going strong.
