OK, I know there are probably a ton of threads on this subject, but I am not that good at digging them out.
I just picked up my Ranger, 2002 XLT Supercadb with 4.0 2wd. I want to replace the plugs because it doesnt run real smooth at idle. At 1500 rpms and up it is smooth as silk, but at idle, which runs at about 700rpm on the tach, it "bumps" to describe it best. Besides, I just got it and want to "freshen it up" so to speak!
So, What do people use? The Expy forums say Motorcraft platinum, ONLY. I used NGK Vpowers on my Dakota with great results, and my old ASTRO ran awesome on splitfires.
AND - make sure you get the right plugs!!! A lot of the plug manufacturers list the plugs for the 4.0 ohv and the 4.0 sohc as being the same - THIS IS NOT CORRECT! If you put ohv plugs in the sohc it will not run right - it will ping, etc. because the plug reach is incorrect.
Stock plugs are Motorcraft AGSF34FP, which crosses to Autolite 5144 (different suffixes for copper, platinum, double platinum, etc.)

Stick with NGK.
I'm running NGK in my 4.0 OHC and love them. The stock Motocraft plugs were highly disappointing. On average they eroded 22 thousands in 80k. That's a lot for a platinum.
