Hello everyone, just a day or two ago I noticed that my truck was making a new sound. I have noticed it is the worst when the engine is cold and it sounds kinda like a "ticking" or louder then normal sound espcially noticable when the engine is accelerating. As the engine warms up the sound starts to diminish, but can still be faintly heard when the engine is totally warm. From searching the forum I found some posts with the same problem and they all pointed to the exhaust manifold as the most likely culprit. I read that it is not uncommon for the studs that the manifold attach to to rust out and break off. I guess it could also be possible that the manifold itself could be cracked or have a hole in it.
Does this sound like Im on the right track? Are there any other things this could turn out to be based on my description? Other then the sound the engine runs great and doesnt seem to be affecting performance at all so far.
Mike this very well could be your problem. Most of the time I find that the nuts on the studs rust and break off. Also the driver side of the engine is normaly the side that goes out. By doing a visual check you can most often notice the studs missing or rusted off. if you notice some go ahead and replace the manifold regardless if you hear the ticking or not. If you let this go too long it could damage your aluminum head. The leak will cut a groove in the head. New head cost 2000.00 verses a manifold 155.00. What you need to do is have someone start the truck and hold the brake as well engage the emergency brake and engage the truck into drive then slowly raise the rpms and try to locate the leak by listening to both sides. As well do the same thing with truck in reverse.
If this is your problem I highly suggest that you replace all of the studs out with stainless steel studs. They cost a little more but it will pay off in the long run....GOOD LUCK IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS YOU CAN SHOOT ME A EMAIL
Hi and thanks for the information. Im taking the truck in on Friday to be fixed. Hopefully running like this to and from work for a week wont hurt the engine.
