I was heading home last night and the alternator went out on me. I made it the rest of the way home on the batteries and this afternoon I replaced the alternator. Charged up the batteries and it fired up no problems.
Now my tach is stuck. Its pegged all the way to the right and it wont release back. I unhooked the batteries and that didnt help. What do I need to do to get the tach working again?
well, normaly when you change batteries and such, when you rehook them and flip the key, all the gauges cycle all the way and back, it sounds like the tach may have gotten stuck during it cycle, ive never heard of it happening, but, i would remove the dash cover around the gauges, then remove the bezel over the gauge cluster and remove the clear cover, then tap the needle to the left ever so slightly to see if it releases, try not to use any force as these needles are very sensetive, but it may just fall back down, then just start it and hope that was it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
my feeling is its just stuck as the cycle is very fast and the needle reaches a spot where it will never reach while driving. hope this is your fix.
Fuse #19 may have popped. SMack the top of the dash or hit the steering wheel with your hand of course, with the key on. This may elimenate any mechanical hanging in the gage itself. Any tests on the tach will need the instrument cluter removed.
