I've got a pretty serious power steering fluid leak, only I don't think it's a hose or the pump... I believe it's the steering gear.
When looking from the engine compartment down to the gear, all is dry. But, when you stick your head underneath and take a peek, there is fluid all on the frame rail.
Can the seals in the steering gear be replaced, or do I have to buy a whole new unit? What kind of a pain in the butt am I looking at when repairing it?
Have a really good look first. Clean the area well and see if you can see definately where the fluid is coming from. The air flow can spread fluid from a leaking pipe all over the place. However if it is the steering box shaft seals it is not a big deal. You can buy a seal kit. You then remove the drop arm, remove a snap ring and the seals and washers. Install the new ones, bolt everything up and that`s it. If you do the job make sure you note carefully the order the old seals and washers come out so the new ones go in in the exact order.
I'm in the middle of a water pump/timing chain replacement right now, so I will definitely clean the area up while I'm there and make sure of where the power steering fluid is coming from.
