I installed a set of gauges a month ago (autometer pyro and boost) I have had a strange intermitant problem with the pyro . The needle will bounce around then go below o to a 6 oclock position pointing straight down sit there for awhile then work the way it should. Tonight it stayed in the 6 oclock position for a 40 minute ride when I shut her down the needle jumped where it should be. I have moved the referance wire to three different places in the fuse box , I have checked the nut and bolt conections from the probe. When I wired the gauges in I did hook the gauge ground to the light ground. Do I have a bad probe, anybody got any ideas ? I am going to change the ground wire later today.
They are supposed to move backwards to the pin when the truck is first started, and then read correctly. Its part of their auto calibration thing.
I would double check the ground first as that is every bit as important as the 12+. I drilled and added a dedicated ground screw for my gauges. I then scratched the paint off under the screw head to make sure of a good ground bond to metal. I'm a little **** that way since I'm an electrical contractor.
I do know a few had issues with their Autometer Pyros so you might do a search to see. Maybe a mismatched thermocoulple to gauge.
Hope you find it quick. It kinda kills the buzz when the newly finished mod has issues.
if you hook a DMM to the 2 wires coming from the sender and crank the truck you should see about 0.2volts if you hold the RMP at 2000 you should see the voltage rise steadily in very small amounts. To get the accual scale for the gauge you will need to call the manufacturer. My Phantom II's read from about 0.1 to ~0.9 volts in 0.01 increments as the temp rises. This may help rule out the sender.
On the ground I used the metal dash support just under the fuse panel for all of the grounds. No problems yet.
I changed the ground and the power source for the ref.wire . Took it for a 130 mile cruise today didn't act up at all. I will just have to wait and see. As far as checking the sender it never read wrong when I was at home with my volt meter. It has only done this 4 times in about a month.
