PS pump overflow problem

Hey, i just recently put a heavy duty power steering box in my 67' bronco, got everthing hooked up right, filled the pump up and took it out for a test drive. Everthing worked great, still needed to bleed the system so i took it back home. When i turned it off fluid started to spew out of the top of the power steering pump. I let it just spill out thinking that i overfilled it and started it back up. The pump didnt have enough fluid in it to actualy turn the wheels so a added anough to make it start pumping. But just as i thought it just spewed it right back out again after i shut it off. Any ideas?

Try checking your return line if somehow got restricted during the install. Remove the return line at the pump. Plug the nipple at the pump to prevent a leak on your garage floor. Stick the hose into a clear plastic container and have a helper start the engine for only a few seconds to see if fluid flows freely.

I'm guessing maybe a restricted return line might cause the pump to back up into the reservoir and spew it out.

What pump are you using? Are you using a modified stock Bronco steering boxes or one of the new upgraded aftermarket boxes?

thanks for the insight guys, i double posted this on the classicbroncos.com/forums and they helped me to figure out that it was merely air in the line. Apparently i had not complete bled the system so the air was just compressing while the engine was running. So then it would take in more fluid, so i would fill it up, then when i turned it off the air would decompress and push the fluid out.

Thanks guys

Glad you got it figured out. It crossed my mind that maybe it was burping air, but I assumed that you had already bled it and it was not improving when you were adding fluid to it.
