how do you test a coil??
this may be irrelivant .... but on the old style coils with the two terminals (one for the ground and one for the positive)..if you hook up the ground wire and test the positive one without it hooked up to anything it is also reading a ground.......... does that mean the coil is toast?

Actually it's +, points (or interrupter circuit), and case ground. You can test it on vehicle by removing the wire to the points and use a jumper to rapidly ground and unground the the points terminal (be careful it can zap the snot out of you). You should get a fat spark each time it's ungrounded.
