Simple Tire Question

Does anyone know why tires are derated when installed in a dual wheel set-up? I dont see why the application would make a difference.
Thanks

Let me take a crack at this. Please tell me if you agree.

According to the "National Highway Traffic Safety Administration", particularly the "Office of Vehicle Safety Compliance", Using tire inflation data for dual rear wheel applications. Recommended pressures are approx 10 psi (I say approx, because they use the metric system) lower than the same tire if used in a single wheel application. Vehicle tire inflation data, located on the vehicles "B" pillar should confirm this. Those lower pressures resulted in a lower rating (when used in a dual wheel configuration), per tire. This de-rates the tires as individuals, only if they are used in a dual wheel configuration, and inflated to the suggested inflation. Now the sum of all tires load rating will be higher than the same size tire in a single wheel configuration, (when the single tire is inflated to single wheel pressure). Even though the duallies are slightly de-rated, because there are four, they will exceed the load limits of a single tire of the same rating.
Dually tires suggested inflation lower = less load rating (each tire)
Single tire suggested tire inflation higher = higher load rating

Does that make sense to you?
Now ask about "super single" tires.................
