My husband has a 1957 f100 with a bad rear end (axel) . would he be able to swap rear end parts with his 1974 f100 ?
Not easily. The whole housing would go under the 57 with some modification but it would likely be too wide. If only the axle or axle bearing is bad, it would be easier to replace the axle and/or bearing. The axle from the 74 will not interchange.

It might, Only if the 57 f100 was built with a 9" rear. It will have the removable center part. And olny if the 74 f100 was built with small v8 or 6cyl. The 74 axles would need to have the 28 spline. You cold swap the center part with the gears.
Hope this helps,
Peace,
I'd be surprised if you can swap parts - he might get lucky, but in addition to the 28/31 spline issue already covered, 9" rear ends used two distinct types of bearings: 1. Ball bearings where the race is attached to the bearing, and 2. Tapered roller bearings where the race usually remains in the axle housing when you pull it out.
Also, 9" rear ends have an unlimited variety of axle lengths. Some diffs split the axle in half so both axle shafts are the same length. Others are off-set and one is longer that the other side.
In addition, 9" rears got wider in 73-up. What I'd do is go to your favorite junk yard with the axle that needs replaced and have them match it up. Good luck!
Differential and pinon bearings, the case, axles, pinon and axle gears, other misc case parts...etc went to the "slim line" type on: WBG; WDM; WDN; WDR & WEW 8 3/4" - 9" rear ends in 1969.
The change was made on F100's after serial number J30,001.
