A Brownie is just an auxillary transmission, mainly used in early HD trucks. Depending on what model you have, it will give you between 8 and 16 forward gears. There are times when the gearing overlaps so there is a possibility that some will repeat.
We have an old Peterbilt log truck converted to a off highway wrecker that has a 5 speed main box, a 4 speed aux and another 2 speed aux transmission. With two speed rearends, it has a gear choice for any situation. But in the days when 220 horse was big power, you needed lots of gearing to get the job done.
