Check the fuel pressure with a gauge at the fuel rail to diagnose the regulator. Noise at the pump isn't unusual or cause for worry. Mine has whined/buzzed for 4 years now.
Let me know what you figured out with your whine/buzz, mine has had it for around two years now and I would like to know what it is. It's a off and on sound, haven't figured this one out yet.
Mine has buzzed off and on for 11 or so years now and I am on my 2nd replacement. OEM and AZ pumps do the same. A few other friends have the same problems. Sounds kinda like a bee hive.
Thanks for your reply. I was hoping to get the benefit of your expertise. I was thinking that the recent change in pitch (whine to buzz) might be caused by improper operation of the regulator. I understand that a faulty regulator can over or under pressurize the system. This might over work the pump and change the sound. I maybe way off base. I’ll try the to test and eliminate this issue. I’m wondering if you could cut an access hole over the pump without removing the tank (assuming that my life insurance is paid up)?
Yes you can cut a access hole. There even was a web page showing the procedure(sorry do not remember the address). I changed mine by myself. I guess I got lucky but I thought it was easy. The hardest part was getting the bolts loose( did not have air tools) but with a little break free and elbow grease they came off. I used a floor jack to lower the tank.
I had a buzzing fuel pump in my 1988 mustang. After I replaced it the new one buzzed louder than the one that was in there. I am sure it was the fuel pump because we took it out and ran it outside of the pump and it made noise.
I feel if it ain't broke don't fix it.
But if you feel more secure with a new pump go for it.
