Piston sizing for stroker?

Since my 460 will not take the 0.080 ( already at 0.030 over) overbore needed for the JE pistons ( only comes in 0.030 and 0.080 boring) in the 514 stroker kit, is there a piston company of equal or greater valve and quality of the JE's to get an "on-the-shelf" size and price of 0.040 (4.40") overbore pistons and up borings? Will be running with the FMS SCJ heads that require the inverted tops. CR to be around 9.5.

have you had the bore checked to see if you could run the .030's?as long as the bore isn't worn very much you should be able to just glaze break the cylinder walls and run it.if not you may need to get custom pistons,i don't think the .040's are a shelf item.

maybe get another block and bore it .030?remember you need scj specific pistons.

im with bronco on this one, id go get a different block and bore that to .030, there isnt any company that does off-the-shelf stroker pistons for anything other than .030 or .080. if they did, my engine would be bored .020 for a 542 instead of 545 for a .030. the more meat left on the block the better.

Cool

That's been a major problem aound here, have been looking for somtime to find another D9TE-AB block to keep the same block numbers in the truck. None to be found---- at any cost. The machine shop did check the 0.030 walls, and they were afraid to try the 0.030 pistons for fear of problems later on. Too much slack. I as afraid that the pistons only came in the two sizes, but wanted to verify that from other sources. My only recourse at this time, like ya'll said, find a block, or pay the big extra cost of custom pistons! Any other comments? What is he cost of a set of customs?

another thing to watch out for is availability of rings.in fact this would be the first thing to check because custom pistons can be made in any size but rings may be harder to come up with.i would say custom pistons could run anywhere between $450-$800 range.

would it work if you just had the cylinders honed and then got forged pistons??? will they expand a little more when up to temp. than cast??

JB, I will look into what you said about the pistons, the shop doing the work had concerns about just honing out the walls. Custom rings, I was told, will come with the custom pistons, or ordered from the same company as the pistons so the sizing shouldn't be a problem. You want believe how many places I have called trying to find a motor, they are all being crushed down here, the price of metal scrape is up and they are cashing in on the old stuff. Thanks again for the comments.

There use to be some on ebay. You may have to extend your search. I live in the Dallas Fort Worth area and haven’t had a problem. I would try and find a place that specializes in cores<O</O

Good luck <O</O

speed pro offers both forged and hypereutectic in 4.400 and 4.420 bores. Available thru summit. My buddy has the 4.400 bore hypereutectic in his 73, held up real well for a few years now, occasional mud pit action. much less expensive than JE also.

but those pistons are for stock stroke, not a 514 stroker stroke.

Why not just contact JE pistons to find out the price? You may be surprised.

Holy brown stuff batman! $1200 for a set of pistons. I guess they would have to reprogram the CNC machine and shut down production but ouch.
