Ok I had a fuel leak in the valley, so I thought it was a fuel pump going bad. Yesterday my friend brought my Superchip tuner back. Put it on Hi-po and it is like it has a miss when you get on it. I have a intake, 3in dp to 4in exhaust. It also blows no smoke at all when your on it. It will blow a little reving it up. I had another 97 that would smoke pretty good with the chip. It also has no codes except the common p0603. I got to looking today and saw the fuel filter housing lid was not all the way down. Tried to tighten it and it wouldnt move, so I loosened it and it had 2 gaskets on it. With 2 gaskets would it leak and would it run rougher with a chip. I pulled the extra gasket and it still runs rough with the chip on. What is the problem?
Are you using the original ford cap on the fuel filter housing or one that came with an aftermarket filter? I had one that got cross threaded and would not seat properly. Check that. Also if it has the square center try tightening it a bit, also make sure there is some fuel on the gasket b4 tightening it. If no square center use a long screwdriver to tighten the cap. Make sure you keep it down so you don't break any of the fins on the cap.
Drove it to day and it dosent run any better. The higher up the tuner is the worse the miss is. It also dosent blow any smoke except for reving it up. No smoke under a load and the miss gets worse going up a long hill.
Drain the fuel filter and clean the housing. Replace the filter too. It sounds like a fuel problem but it could be electrical too. If the filter doesn't help check the UVC harnesses. There are 2 on each side. Look for corroded, burnt or bent pins and sockets.
I replaced the fuel filter yesterday. Just looked at the Uvc harnesses and the rear passenger side is missing the retainer clip but no bad sockets or pins. It runs fine at idle though. I unplugged it while it was running and it made a noticeable difference.
I drove it again runs the same and then As soon as I got back home I cleaned the fpr screen, and shimmed the fpr. Runs alittle better but still has the same miss. But I noticed that when I opened the fuel filter housing the level seemed low. How full should the filter housing be?
Good question, I drain my housing before taking the top off but I assume it needs to be full so there is no air getting into the system. Someone else will jump in here.
Did you check your FP before and after the FPR shim.?
Does it run OK with the chip removed or returned to stock?
Does it sound like 1 cylinder missing or random?
I did not check the fp yet. It runs ok stock you dont feel the miss untill you really lug it up a hill. I cant tell if it is just 1 or random. All I know is that the more of a load you put on it the worse it gets.
That could be the fuel pressure dropping off, or even almost running down low enough, where the injectors don't have enough fuel to fill the whole plunger assembly. In your first post you said you thought it might be the pump going bad. I'd check fuel pressure, if its low change the pump and tighten the connections, before you go and throw anymore parts at it.
I left it unplugged last night and it got pretty cold. I started it up this afternoon and it ran really good untill it got up to operating temp, then the miss started again. I am going to check fuel pressure tomarrow.
you have a fuel issue. when you remove the fuel filter cap the resivour should be full to the top. your fuel leak in the valley is not allowing the resivour to fill up and stay at a level that the truck will run at under load, that is why it feels like its missing. No fuel.
ok heres an update. so far I have replaced the lift pump, fuel hoses, cleaned the fpr screen really good this time, map sensor and cam sensor. It still has a miss, whats next? I am starting to get fed up. Thanks.
