i have a 89 f250 w/ a 351 and it has a slight problem. at idle it has a tick and when accelerating it sounds like a pumping noise. it sounded like it was coming from the passenger bank, but yesterday i drove it like i stole it after it warmed up and the pumping went away or i thought. but today i went and cleaned the throttle body with a spray so i would imagine alot got down into the combustion chambers, because it smoked like crazy when it was running and now it sounds like it is coming from the drivers bank. i just bought it a month ago and a am not sure when the ignition parts last changed. could it be flowed plug or an exhaust leak.
sometimes an oil change will take care of it. I have had them so bad I had to replace them. The lifters have a little check valve in them that keeps the oil in them, if the check valve starts to weep, the result is a noisy lifter.
i probably should change the oil again. because i changed it when i got it and the old was black and had not been changed in a while. should i use 10w30 or change weight.
I live in Virginia and I use straight 30 weight all the time. If you have been using 10-30W, it is your choice. If your truck has lots of miles on it and questionable oil change intervals, you might want to flush it out.
here in ohio it has been downright cold these last couple of weeks. i don't really know that much about oils and what the weights mean. i do know that the lower the number the thinner they are. like my old ranger and my new car both use 5w20 which is like water.
another thing yesterday i pulled a trailer with a motorcycle on it and it ran great and i cannot remember hearing the noise while i was pulling. don't know if that has anything to do with what you believe could be the problem but thought it couldn't hurt to ask
