I bought my 01 F250 V-10 with 75,000 miles 3 months ago. It took some time getting used to 10 mpg, but lately I have been getting 5-6 mpg. It seems to be running fine. No strange sounds or performance issues. I drive it pretty easy, rarely even hitting 3000 rpm's. Any ideas on what could be the problem?
i lost about 1 mpg cuz of the cold but geeze 5 mpg is alot...are you sure you dont have a 15,000 lb trailor back there your forgetting about because all that torque might cause you to forget there is a trailor back there...lol...no there is definatley something wrong my dad has a 04 f350 dually crew cab and hes getting 9-10 regularley and he drives it like he stole it!!!...what gears do you have...i know its hard but try keeping the rms under 2500 and also are you letting the truck warm up for 20 minuted every morning???
With the cold weatehr that will affect it since the engine will take more fuel due to cold air charge from this winter weather. BUT I have to seriously ask how much warm up time in the morning is being done as compared to just hopping in and leaving like in the summer.
I know since it got cold (even though I drive alot) I've been having to fuel up all 3 trucks every week as compared to an average of 2-2.5 weeks like when it's warmer out. The guys and I tend to let the trucks get toasty in the mornin before going out and then if I have quick stops (under 15 minutes) the truck does'nt shut off....and is shows in my fuel bills
Rich is right on. A good tune-up and make sure the tires are properly inflated.
I have a similar situation. I've been monitoring my mileage for the past few months accurately and have consistently come up with 8.9-9.0 miles per gallon average city and highway. Feels like it is less though because I gas up like once a week for an almost full tank.
I replaced the air filter and the spark plugs and the tires are at the right PSI's. I also replaced the fuel filter and cleaned the MAF. I was hearing something about a second fuel filter. Is there a second fuel filter that can be replaced? Also, did I miss something else?
No other fuel filter I know of. The cold weather has alot to do with poor mileage. Mine is the same mileage as yours in the winter. During warmer weather I go up 1-2 mpg's.
definetely something going on, i am running 44" tires and 16" of lift and i consistantly get 10-11 around town and 11-12 onthe highway
change the fuel filter and the plugs, and i have been told that your O2 sensor can cause you to loose mpg

wow i wish i could get that much fuel out of my truck..i am consistently filling up every 4 days...thats $100 every 8 days. at 245 miles average per tank!
Mine seems to stay pretty consistent...12.9-13.8 regardless of the weather. Other folks with the 6 speed seem to think mpg is more stable with the manual tranny...don't know for sure, but mine is...
I keep it garaged so there is not a lot of extra warm up time in the winter...I usually get 250+ miles from full to about 1/4 tank...
i had the same problem and still not totally cured i was letting the truck warm up and short trips but what did help some was my thermastat was getting weak it opened to soon so it never got to temp short by only 10 degrees but the truck seemed to stay in a rich mode and would burn more fuel so you may want to try that as well
