Here are the latest FACTS: GM market share LOST 3.2% DOWN to 22.4%. Ford LOST 2.7% DOWN to 15.2%. Conversely, Toyota ROSE 2% to 16.1%. Ford and GM have a fight on their hands vs foreign competition. Until these two get the word out that their products are NOT inferior to the foreign makers this losing of market share is going to continue.
They already lost a generation of car buyers, its not going to be easy. Quality and mpg alone wont do it. The young buyer wants sexy, not just cheap, transportation. The Focus is way long in the tooth, Cobalt is well-built, bland and not even close to the same performance level as the Civic, Rabbit, etc. Detroit still doesnt "get it" and I'm afraid they never will.
I drove a VW for many years, even if a Falcon or Dart might have been more practical. Why? the Falcon was a boring car primarily appealing to my grandfather, who owned one. German cars still have an emotional appeal to me. I dont see myself ever buying a Lincoln. The LS may have been the best chance they had, but I could never even find a stick-shift model in stock anywhere to test drive. I'm driving a BMW now. So, in passenger cars, Detriot actually lost a good portion of at least two generations.
