87 rear axle should be a ford 8.8". some broncos did come with 9" axles, though. To be sure you should check your owners manual and your sticker. Also, when swapping an axle out you gotta make sure you're putting the same gearing in. Wouldn't wanna have a 3.54 front axle and a 4.10 rear, if you know what I mean.

'87 was the first year of RABS so it'll have the 8.8. Just match the gear ratio and you should be ok

'87-96 F-150 & Bronco rear axles are interchangeable. 2/4WD doesn't matter, but some have a limited slip (TracLok) differential. On the ratio tag on the axle, it will have an "L" where the decimal of the ratio should be: the second line will have something like "3L55 88 ###", with "3 55" meaning 3.55 ratio and "88" meaning 8.8 inch.

Don't bother striving for the limited grip, it doesn't work anyway, and actually complicates matters if you wanna install a lunchbox locker like the Lock Rite.

If a yard has two rears, one open and limited grip, and they want more for the latter, tell them you'll gladly pay less and take the open diff. Putting money into the Trac-Lok is about as effective as flushing it down the toilet.

Funny, every traction lock rear end I've ever had has worked just fine. Granted, I don't do anything close to "extreme" rock crawling or anything like that, but for what mud and rocks I've come across they've worked just fine.
