I missed the synthetic part. Pardon me. I'm fixin' to do my trans fluid changeover soon and I've got it on the brain.
The important part is a full fluid flush to get rid of dirty fluid. Any residual non-synthetic will not cause you problems due to it being non-synthetic, but it's always best to get it all out...lines and coolers and all.
There's a procedure around here somewhere that tells how to do a full flush by yourself.
When I drained the converter and changed the filter, it took 15 qts to fill her back up. The manual states a 4x4 has a 17.7qt capacity and a 4x2 has a 17.1qt capacity.
Thanks for that link incredible, save me some time searching! I'm gonna do mine this spring in anticipation of a good year of camping, lol! I'm doing mine kinda overkill since the truck only has 37k on the clock but a new trany was put in in 04' with 21k on the clock (planitary gear exploded going down the hwy). So in reality the trans only has about 17k on it but I'm gonna flush it and refill with Mercon V! Anybody have any Ideas what the dealership put in when they installed the new unit?? mercon or mercon V??? still seems highly debated!
I have changed mine twice, at 30,000 and at 60,000 both with Mobil1-Syn.
It is not that hard to do yourself.
Someone wrote a process to do this.
It will be as good as a flush IMHO.
Also when you do the tranny, why not get a couple of additional qt's and take the turkey baster treatment to the PS fluid?
