I have a 03 f-150 4.6 L stx king cab bone stock 51000 miles
there is a clunk sound coming from the front end when you back up a turn left it kind of sounds like it pops? I looked under there but nothing seemed loose or broke. Anyone have something they might be able to point me to?
Check the sway bar end links-They connect the sway bar to the lower conthol arm-Might not look out of line but the top of the link breaks off, then when it moves the sway bar pops off the top , that would be the noise you hear.
The end link is a 4"-5" bolt with rubber bushings on both ends. One end connects to the sway bar and the other end connnects to the lower control arm. Both of mine have broken. The 1st one around 60k and the other around 75k.
When my sway bar links broke, I never noticed any "clunks" while turning or backing up. I noticed clunks when hitting bumps and potholes in the road. In that case, I just unbolted the links from the control arms and pushed the sway bar up and out of the way.
The "clunk" you may be hearing could be coming from a steering component. Every once in a great while, my truck will clunk from the front end while backing up and with the wheel at a lock. This is NOT due to the sway bar links being broke.
hi, my links broke at 150k and the front end felt out of control, it took out a shocker at the same time. which one caused what i will never know. but there was no clunk.
i do have a clunk now and it is getting more and more frequent and i cannot find the cause it is driving me mad. i wish you luck and hopefully i too will benafit along the way. tis a good forum this awone.
