I just replaced the suspension on a 1988 T-Bird. (Mustang is the same car.) I can duplicate that for the lower link, just upsized. Extruded box steel or rectangular steel tubing with U-bolts should do the trick.
It had stamped steel that attached to a bracket on the body, then came down diagonally under the axle and bolted to a bracket on the rear of the axle... Between the axle and the point where it attached to the frame, it had a flat perch for a coil spring... Replace the coil spring with an air bag and I should be good.
