Been looking at an 03 F250 SuperDuty X cab FX4 XL package with the 5.4, auto tranny. It is the truck I would order from Ford if I were to buy a new one. It has cloth seats, vinyl floor, (no carpet) but still has cruise and tilt. Only thing holding me back is the engine. It has the 5.4 Triton and I am not knowlegable about this motor. My 95 dually has the 7.3 Powerstroke in it and I don't know if I want to go back to a gas burner. I'll keep my F350 for now even if I get this 03. Asking price is $15,900 on the truck with 84K on it. Already got the financing in place, all I gotta do is sign up for a 4 year membership in the finance world. Gonna go look at it one more time tomorrow. Don't know how to add http but if interested it is at www.daniellmotors.com in Hattiesburg MS.
Any tips of the 5.4 are welcome.

Are you going to keep the 7.3 dually? Going from a dually 7.3 to a SRW 5.4 is going to be a big difference. Ive driven all of the big 3, with every different motor they come with, and the different years. I have to say the 5.4 is a dog for a small block V8. My vote is for the V10 if you want gas, or stick with the powerstroke. I like the 7.3, 6.0, and 6.8, all great motors.

3 mos ago from a dealer I picked up my v10 '03 CC SRW fx4 Sport with 48,000 on it for 21000.00......it has every option on it,original sticker was 41000.00.I looked at alot of trucks over a couple months and that seems high for a 5.4.I dont think you will be happy with the 5.4 once you hook up a trailer to it.

When I bought mine I told the dealer what I wanted and the payment I wanted....next day he had 12 trucks for me to look at,I picked this one sight unseen and love it

Need a little more information elcoloco.

What do you expect from this truck? Loads, towing limits, DD (Daily Driver), long hauls, ECT.

IMO the 5.4 is a proven rock solid engine. Mine provides all the power I require to tow my boats and haul whatever I need. It's a DD BTW.

I am just looking for a good daily driver that I can get down some of these old woods roads that I hunt. It's not fun trying to turn a LWB dually around on a pig trail. I had heard that the 5.4 wasn't a great power motor but that with a chip, performance can be increased. I will tow a bass boat with it and that is probably the heaviest load it would ever see. I sold my 5th wheel camper after Katrina and don't have any real use for the dually any longer, but it's been paid for for a while and I hate to get rid of it right now.

My .02 cents: I had an 01 SD with the 5.4 V-8 in a SuperCab. I think that engine was fine for that body and as my daily driver with only the occassional transporting of some heavy stuff in the bed. For my 03 CrewCab, I opted for the V10 and am much happier with the power and torque. In my opinion, the V-8 with the CC might be ok for daily driving but would be underpowered if you had to pull anything with any significant weight.

Good info guys, Thanks for the input. I am going to hold off for a while on buying. I am looking for the same truck with fewer miles on it and probably the diesel engine. I like the stump pulling power if I ever do need it. Speaking of stump pulling, after Katrina came through here, we lost 8 pecan trees in our yard. The biggest measured 41 inches across the base. I cut all the trees into 8' sections and drug them to my fire pile with my F-350. broke a couple of log chains but the truck never got in a real bind. The 5 sp manual tranny was a perfect match for that engine for pulling. Don't have any more trees to pull if another storm like that comes through. Man, I sure miss my big ol trees though.
