On my 92 F-150 302EFI roller cam motor I get a ticking noise if I let the truck sit for a few days at a time and I am suspecting that the roller lifters might be ticking because of oil starvation up to the lifters. Would this be plausible on roller lifters? I am getting ready to install a cam and was wanting to know if the roller lifters would be worth replacing while I am in there. I am kinda on a budget though!
What oil filter are you using? Some of the cheaper stuff(fram)allows all the oil to drain out of the motor if left for a few days, this would cause some lifter noise on startup. The Ford FL1A is the cure for this.
I have always used the FL1A oil filter so I can't really say that the oil filter is causing this problem.... Is that what I am hearing though, is a lifter tick?
More likely the ticking is from excessive lash resulting from pushrod wear. The factory roller lifters are good for 200K miles (at least, depending on maintenence) The roller pushrods tend to wear at the rocker ends due to the fact they do not rotate like flat tappet rods. The rotation in flat tappets lets the pushrods rotate too, equalizing the wear at the rocker ends.
So you think my early morning ticking is caused from Pushrod wear...? Maybe I need to replace the pushrods when I got to upgrading that camshaft this spring??
Pushrods are cheap, but when you've got the old ones out you can always put them against a straight edge to see if they're bending at all. In my old engine I had a lifter come loose and the pushrod took the brunt of the damage... Looked like a banana when I pulled it out.
