Overloaded?

I just joined this site but have been reading some great things for a while.

I just got my 2007 F250 6.0 in Dec. and have put about 6000 miles on it and love it. I pull a 29' horse trailer that weighs about 15,000 lbs when loaded. I'm about 200 lbs over my gcwr which is'nt much. With the gooseneck in the bed and the trailer transfering 30% of its weight to the truck I'm about 2700 lbs over my 10000 lb gvwr. Right now the only upgrades I've made are installing the Firestone air bags in the rear. These makes a huge differance. With 70 psi in the bags my truck sits level pulling this trailer and I have no problems pulling it at all. My concern is when I'm pulling this load even for a short distance, when I stop, I can smell burning oil. Like if you spilled a little on the motor and it was burning off. I cant tell if is tran. or motor oil. All my guages show normal temps. I know my suspension is overloaded but the eng. and trany should not be. Any ideas on where to start looking?

Welcome to the site!

Your owners manual should have all your weight limitations...If you go over them and have an accident you are going to regret it big time.

Are you sure it's not the brake pads you can smell. Kinda smells like clutch...but worse.

I know I'm over my weight limit but I'll just have to take that chance.

I dont think its my brakes I smell since I know what that smells like and I not using the truck breaks much with the trany downshifting (which works GREAT) and the trailer breaks helping out.

I was thinking or hoping the same about the factory lube but I would think that would smell at other times as well. This only happens when I'm pulling that trailer. If I unhook it and drive a few miles the smells gone. When I pull other trailers weighing between 3000 and 6000 lbs I dont get the smell.

How hard are you trying to accelerate? Could the trans be really pissed off, and is blowing fluid onto the exhaust? It may be doing this more than you know, and you are only noticing it when you stop, since the truck is moving, and would be pretty hard to smell.

In the average accident it's probably not going to make a difference. Unless you get a cop that's a real pr&*k that wants to go to the trouble of having you weighed to prove his case, which would be required. However, God forbid you go out overloaded, have a wreck and seriously mame or kill someone. You can rest assured it is gonna be a problem because they are going to check. Now the little traffic fine your gonna get is not going to be the problem. The help that this fact is gonna give the lawsuit against you is where the trouble is going to be.

If I kill someone I could see that being a problem. I'll just have to drive a little more cautious or suffer the consicuinces.

I think the smell is hapening when I drive, but I can only smell it when I stop.
I have been accelerating a little fast just to see how the truck handle it. Do you really think it can spray fluid past the gasket in this situation. That could not be the norm at normal operating ranges.

There used to be a time when the trans would pass fluid out of the front pump seal, that is supposed to be fixed now, but I have seen them puke from the vent at the top of the trans. Are there any signs of fluid under the truck? It should start looking glossy soon, or at least leave some residue on the bumper, or the leading edges of the fifth wheel. Heak, when was the last time you checked the trans fluid? Is it low yet?

Transmision fluid has a very distinct smell. Could it be that you have a leaking wheel seal on your trailer and oil is getting on the brakes?

I also thought of something else? How high are the EGT's? Are you running that thing over say 1400 deg. and burning it up? I would suspect that you also do not have an idea of how hot the trans is. Probably would be a good idea to get a pyrometer installed, and since you are towing such a big load, might want to get a trans temp gauge too.
