What is an acceptibal voltage for my Alternator in my truck? My battery keeps spitting out acid on top, it's seeming like its over voltageing. I'm mesureing 14.9 while idleing, but when I plug stuff in like my 800 watt Converter it will stall for a breif second. or sputter.
I dont trust the actual voltage meter on the dash, it moves around a little bit too. I can't go much longer and have it ruin my nice battery I have.
I know your not supposto run deep cycle in the truck, but I think the alternator is killing this battery like it did the last one. It was doing the same thing. Thank god for the deep cycle though, its saved me a few times with the higher cranking amps, and longer draw time.
Sounds like you need an Optima. One of the nicest things I ever purchased. I got a new battery tray out of the junk yard, painted it all up nice, installed the red top Optima about a year ago and it looks like it did the day I put it in still. The only way to go, tons of power.
14.9 is too high! Whoa! The regulator may have blown..check your AM radio stations, are you getting a real bad buzz(Hum) that follows the rpms of the engine? The reg may have a cooked diode.
Please go to fordfuelinjection.com to see what kind of alternator u have..you may have a second generation (2G) that is going to fail every six months..the bad alternators have 2 plastic connectors, a fan under the pulley, and outside the case. You need a 3rd generation alternator, 100A.
I need a new battery tray .... never thought I might find one in the junk yard .... guess I have been away from them for too long!
Sorry ... had to!
Optima is a great battery .... just wish they had one in town with reverse posts that fit my Dub when I needed one .... the 150 will get one if I ever kill the battery that's in there, didn't drive it for a week ... hopped in it on Sunday and noticed the radar detector was on, stupid cigarette lighter that doesn't turn off with the key, I am used to my car detector turning itself of. Truck cranked a little slow, took a 10 mile trip for the 6 block trip I was running and it has been working great.
14.9 volts would be a little over spec. - I don't know if that alone would be enough to boil the battery though. Regardless, it does sound like a problem with the regulator. By any chance, did you fill up the battery with water from a source other than a distilled water jug? I you used plain tap or well water, depending on the ph. balance where you are, the water/acid could be boiling up just for that reason. Just my .02
