Another MPG question

Just filled up the 05 v10 4x4 3.73 beast this morning and computed 9mpg on the last tank of gas. Last tank was premium since I was hearing a little engine knock on the tank prior to this most recent one. Is premium gas less efficient? Its also been real cold. Does that have an impact on fuel efficiency?

Cold definitely affects your mileage negatively.

We have the same truck, and we pretty consistently get high 9's around town. Doesn't get all that cold here in north Texas though.

Premium gasoline has a higher flashpoint than regular. Since it does not burn completely in your 87-octane engine, using it a lot will allow carbon deposits to build around your valves. This eventually brings on more pre-detonation (knocking). Stay with the lower octane fuel as much as possible. If you're experiencing an unreasonable amount of knocking, you have something else wrong that needs attention. Premium fuel is not the answer, and will only cause more problems with knocking.

BTW, I'm averaging 10.5 to 11 MPG (calculated) around town with temps hovering around 40-degrees.

I find that cold weather does not effect my mileage as much as hot weather. Running the engine at an idle to warm up the car can eat into the mileage. I don't do that very often. I just bundle up and let it roll. Now in the summer, that's a different question. I run my A/C all the time, often at an idle. That eats up the fuel.
