ABS question

Hey, I have a 95 F150 and when I start it the ABS light comes on but if i am breaking on ice for example, the tires lock up with no evidence of ABS kicking in. does my truck have ABS and it isnt working, or do all trucks flash the ABS light even if they dont have ABS?

thanks, Josh

95 should have at least rear wheel ABS maybe front also if built late in the year after june I think. Pull codes could be a bad sensor. Mine is doing the same thing and I know I have a bad front wheel sensor it turns off the whole ABS system.

ok, thanks. what do you use to pull the codes? I have heard people talk about using a paper clip, i will just have to do some searching or something. Is there a code reader to buy or is the paper clip thing good enough?

go by your local Autozone they will plug in thier computer for free and tell you the code numbers. Then it is up to you to find the definition usually if you post um in here they are answered quickly

hey, thanks, will have to do that, when I get codes, should I post them here or, which forum should I use?

Edit:

Ok, just got back from autozone (2 blocks away) and the only code that it pulled, other than the pass code, was 122 which they looked up and said was the throttle position sensor reading low voltage, no abs code.

So, I am wondering, is it possible that my truck doesnt have ABS? was it an option, or did all trucks have it?

Thanks

I would think if your truck has an ABS light it would have ABS brakes, well at least rear ABS anyway. Look for a wire leading down near to your rear brakes, if you find one you have ABS Brakes. ABS brakes can be damaged during Brake pad replacement if the the fluid is forced back through the brakelines when the the caliper is compressed back into its bore. When compressing the caliper piston back into its bore you should allow the fluid to escape through the bleed valve, this also allows any sediment that collects in these low sections of the brake system to be flushed out.

ok, first of all, its feakin' cold outside high of 5 today, and high of -5 tomorrow and it sure is windy.

second, I checked under the truck looking for a wire leading to the rear brakes, not exactly sure where I should be looking or where it runs too, but I didnt see anything, that doesnt mean that it isnt there or that it was there at one point but not now.

where exactly will it run? will it go directly to the drum? all i saw was the brake line and the ebrake cable, there was one more opening close to the brake line, but that is a bleed isnt it? its a nipple like piece screwed in, thats all I saw.

ideas?

Should lead to a sensor on the diff. just one sensor on the rear end.

After checking the diff, the only thing I see is a plastic wiring tube that leads to a sensor (probably) directly above where the driveshaft mates up to the diff. Is this what I am looking for, or is that the sender for the speedometer?

That should be it. The speedometer is hooked up to the transmission.

i thought that the speedo sensor was in the rear end, because in a few other threads, I was talking to Kjett and he is in the process of swapping out his rear axle and he decided on a 10.25 sterling so he could keep his speedometer working, other rear axles didnt have the hookup...hmmm... conflicting information... I honestly have no idea so if someone could clear up my confusion I would appreciate it.

I will have to admit I don't know that much about the 1995 trucks, too new for me :-). I am more into the 73-79 trucks and the speedo cable connects to the tranny on these trucks. A lot of what I like about these old trucks is they don't have ABS, computers, catalytic convertors, etc. Good luck

that is your sensor.

the code can be done with a paper clip shorting the wire by your brake swith(i believe the black/orange wire). to find switch kneel on ground follow brack pedal to end, the switch looking mechanism either silver or black is your brake switch. after shorting out wire count flashes of abs light that will give you the code.

Thanks for letting me know that for future reference, but since i got a code for now, I need to know, what my ABS situation is.

by sensor do you mean the ABS sensor or the Speed sensor?
