Actually, they are two different systems/devices. One one side is an air compressor, and on the other side is a drive source. It can be a belt, chain, jet turbine, steam turbine, exhaust turbine, gas engine, gear set, or whatever.

The compressor is designed with very close tolerences so compressed air cannot escape back to the atmosphere. It runs at very high speed to create pressure(boost). The vanes and housing are shaped in such a manner as to promote all of the above. This is why the smog pump, leaf blower, squirrel cage, fan type air movers will not work.

Any of the devices must first be able to produce pressure equal to atmospheric pressure, then provide pressure over atmospheric(boost) in order to work. Anything up to atmospheric pressure will not provide additional power. jd

?
Compressor sides of a centrifugal and a turbo are basically the same.

A turbo is driven by exhaust gas.
A centrifugal supercharger is driven by a belt and step-up gears.

So a cetrrifigal is basically a belt-driven, not exhaust-driven, turbo.
I'm not sure why you consider this an inaccurate statement?

Not really inaccurate, just expounding on the subject. Your use of the word "basically" seems to insinuate the turbo is the basic device, which it isn't. But, maybe I'm just reading you wrong. jd

You'd be surprised how many people look under the hood at my Procharger and ask me "How do you like that turbo?"
I don't care what they call it, I call it FUN.

I know that this is a very old topic, but you have all been wrong. Smog pumps can be used as "superchargers". They can produce up to 50 psi. They do unfortunately only move 50-ish CFM which makes them useless to anyone that runs more than 6-700 cc's in their engine. If you wanted to use a smog pump on your V8, you could, but unless you add 8-10 for a small block, and prob 15 for a big block, you aren't going to see any gains. They work well for go-karts, and motorcycles, but are really useless for vehicles. Most don't have any way of filtering the incoming air as they pull from behind the pulley, so unless you drive in magic land, where dust is no where to be found..........

In magic land you have magic dust and pixie dust, so that isn't an option there either...

the turbo isnt going to last, the bearings in it are not designed to bear the incredible force put on it by a belt. i doubt the shaft will hold it without excessive deflection wich is a problem as well. the belt driven superchargers have big roller bearings to handle the belt tension.

to fabmandelux, turbo bearings not designed to have a side driven load put on them like a belt drive will put on it. may be fun while it lasts but don't think it will last long.
