I think it is easier to find one that was manual from the factory. Thats what I did. But if you already have a bronco you want to keep it shouldn't be too hard. The hardest part (IMO) would be adding the clutch peddel and hole for the gearshift. I'm not sure if you would need to switch computers or wireing harness? That might be a bitch.

Not only does your '78 not have a computer, but neither the C-6 nor any manual needs any wiring from the computer, so there's no concern in that swap even on EFI trucks.
You'll also have to add a clutch linkage (I recommend ~'84-94 hydraulic) and you might have to move the crossmember.
