I have an 88 F-150 with a 300 I6 and a M5OD and whenever I put a heavy load on the truck or hook onto a heavy trailer the clutch will slip no matter what I do. I just put an all new clutch assembly in last year but I found out that I have the ten and a half inch clutch. Does anyone know if I can put a 11 and a half inch clutch assebly in without changing more then the clutch pressure plate and fly wheel?
well im told i have a 11 inch clutch from the prevous owner and i love it ive run the **** outta the truck like powerbraking and towing and hotrodin it so yeah id look for some at summit racing.com or were ever
Thats odd - whats your rear end gearing? I'm on a stock, 130K mile clutch with 2.73's and can pull some serious weight without slippage - just a lot of riding to get it moving. Last big thing I towed was a E150 van loaded with scrap metal & engine blocks around a friend's yard. Lots of riding, but no slippage once fully engaged.
Also - the stock flywheel should be drilled for both 10.5 & 11" clutches, so all it would require to upgrade is buying a new 11" clutch kit.
Sounds like you have a problem with the new clutch. I've pulled over 6000#'s with mine and didn't have any slippage until after several hundred miles with the outside temps around 100*.
As flat4vw stated, you can go to the 11" clutch and not have fit issues inside the M5's bellhousing. I've seen kits with and without a new flywheel. Personal opinion here, replace the flywheel for peace of mind while your at it.
Did you get the flywheel re-surfaced? I made the mistake of thinking mine was "good enough" once, and it started slipping soon after. Re-surfaced it and replaced the clutch disc only. Worked perfect. That's with a 2.73 rear and lots of abuse.
I have been looking into replacing my clutch in my I6 van with a 3-speed. I put a new one in about 2 years ago. I should have shopped around for a HD unit but settled for a stock replacement from China. Grrrrrrr. I think the next one will be a Centerforce brand. Jegs sells them. The add says more holding power than OEM while still maintaining stock pedal feel. They also have a II that has 60% more holding power than stock. A friend told me about this clutch and said that is the only one he is going to use from now on. I put taller tires than stock on my van and sometimes I need to ride the clutch, expecially when cold and traffic is barring down on me.
I did do the flywheel looks good trick when I put the clutch in so that could be part of my problem but at the rate I'm going right now I might as well pull the clutch flywheel and pressure plate and start from scratch.

mines 3.55 not bad but ive would like to try the 4sp if it could bolt up to my transfer case but it wouldnt pull stuff very good like my 5sp. i drove my cousins truck exactly like mine but 2wd 4sp probly 3.00 rear gear (or watever it is) and i loved the 1st gear and reverse (great gears for primary 4x4ing)
