I just got a 67 Cougar with the 289 in it, and have an exhaust leak that I cannot figure out.
There is a hole on each head just forward of the front most spark plug on the passenger side, and rearward of the back most spark plug on the drivers side.
It is on the same face as the exhaust ports, not on the ends of the heads where the thermactor ports are. I though I had leaking exhaust manifold gaskets, but these two spots are where it is all coming from. Does anyone know what the holes are for? It looks to be about 3/4" diameter with a 1/4"-20 hole further in it and the 3/4" opening is not threaded. When revving the engine, my brother says flames come out in bursts, so I assume it is tied into the exhaust ports somehow, but I have no clue. It is in the same exact spot on each head if they were set next to each other.
My experience with 289's is zero, I have only built Clevelands before buying this car.
1967 was second year for T/E pumps, and the smog manifolds had four outlets per side, leading directly into the heads...not at the front/rear. Ford made a threaded tapered hardened plug to close off the holes when T/E was not used.
Any leads where I can get these plugs from?
I read on a Cougar website that a 5/8"-11 bolt will plug the Thermactor hole, but that is on the end of the head where accesories bolt to. They don't mention anything about holes on the same face as the exhaust manifolds.
yep, its on the same face as the exhaust manifolds. I will take a picture of it tomorrow to clarify.
FTE Sponsor y2kparts can prolly get the plugs.
And for the "Doubting Thomases" out there...most of the T/E systems prior to the 1980's used smog manifolds which lead directly to the heads above the exhaust manifolds, on V8's (4 tubes for V8's.)
Some systems use a crosspipe at back of heads, or a pipe into front of heads. There are tons of variables.
The manifolds used a nut and ferrule (parts were available separate), which screwed into pre drilled holes in the head. First use of this system: 1966.
(1963 Falcons didn't have smog pumps )

Relax Man.......
j/k I was ragging on you a bit...and I can tell a 63X from a 62X...that's Ford partese for a 63/62 Falcon.
Beginning in 1966, all the smog pump systems (6 or V8) used the manifold to cylinder head system. It's a whole different system than used today. If you email me off FTE, I can scan and send.
