Gas tank sending uint

Who has had success with thier sending unit sticking etc, and pulling it out and cleaning/lubricating the float lever. Mine recently is sticking at 1/4 tank full. It goes down with ingition turned off; then only moves to 1/4 tank level; even though I fill the tank completley. I guess its time to fork out $60.00 for a new one.

Mitch: Does the float stick, or is it the gauge?

Ground out the wire on the top of the sending unit, and watch the gauge. If the gauge goes all the way up, it is the sending unit.
If not, it is the gauge.

It could be the float, too. They do sometimes get pinholes and get heavy.

If the gauge is OK, then the next step is to pull the sending unit and test it in the full up position. BE VERY CAREFUL, as you'll need to ground the unit, all in the vicinity of gas fumes.

Don't blow yourself up, we want you to stay around!

John;
I will apply you troubleshooting test; It seems wierd to go from a working sending unit to now only going / reading 1/4 tank. I beleive its time for a new unit. I'll check the unit with a ground / test light. I have done this procedure on my 66, to determine if its was a electrical problem or unit problem before. Its not worth a destroy vehicle over a $60.00 part.
Thanks for your reply.

If the float is compromised the guage will only read wherever the float rests. A small amount of gas in a float can make a major difference how the gauge reads.

The floats are made from two pieces of copper soldered together. The solder breaks down, gas leaks in. If this is the case, all you will need is three cheap items.

New Float: C0AZ-9202-A

New gasket: C0AF-9276-B

New Filter Screen: C0AZ-9A011-A

The plastic filter screen slips on the pickup tube, and prolly needs changing.

D7TZ-9275-G is the number for the complete sending unit (replacing D0TZ-9275-A and C1TZ-9275-K)

Uh...that number is one digit off for an intake manifold.

The number is: D7TZ-9275-G .. (replaces D0TZ-9275-A; C1TZ-9275-K))

Thanks guys for your knowledgable expertise. Unfortunately it seems my local Ford Dealer, has no interest in suppling help or supplies for any vehicle under 1980. I will like to know what years are cover with the same sending unit? I got acouple after market suppliers mag's; they seem to break down 57-60 & 61-67 as two different sending units. Thanks for the part numbers.
If I read your post Bill; looks like up to and possible beyond 77 models are the same sending unit?

Mitch, there are other sources than your local Ford dealer. We have sponsors here who can sell you the same items. y2kparts is one.

The complete sending unit D7TZ-9275-G fits all F100/350's with in cab fuel tanks from 1961 thru 1977. The 1957/60's use a different sender, because the tank is different. But the float is the same.

I'd check with a different dealer, and don't forget...Lincoln Mercury dealers can assist you too.

If it's just the brass float, LMC and others sell them for $4.95.

You might also try removing the sending unit from the tank, and checking it with a meter to see if the resistance changes continuously as you sweep it through its travel. (this won't involve sparks as you can disconnect it from your vehicle wiring). Inside the sending unit it's just a potentiometer (variable resistor) which has windings and a wiper arm (I believe). They can develop a worn out section and then you won't see the evenly-changing resistance as you move it. And then it's time for a new one (and $60).

As always; you guy's are the best reference / resource too have. Ed; I will pull the unit, later towards spring and get the parts from your place. Thanks for all your help.
My last daily driver; I drove it for four plus years, with the fuel gauge inop, never ran out of gas, just kept track of mileage and always filled up at 200 miles increments.

cool, i'll override the shipping of $9.50 to like $5.00 and send USPS.

or because of cost of these parts it still might be cheeper to get from local dealer because of shipping. either way let me know if I can help.
