Post trans problem

1991 e.b. bronco, between 30 and 40 mph. i get a vibration that seems to come from the trans. but a friend sitting in the shotgun seat says that he feels it under his feet. it does not happen all the time. when it happens i can move my foot of the gas and it quits. put the gas down again and it does fine. over 55 on the interstate no vibs at all. it seems to me that this happens more going up hill? guys i need your best guess. one guy says this happens with push button overdrive?
i'm keeping the bronco no-matter what. i have waited 30 years for a 4X4 next to scouts it comes close. ed

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-11-03 AT 07:10 PM (EST)]Kinda sounds like the drive shaft. But I’m no expert.

Do you have automatic locking hubs. I ask this because, under the feet of the driver is frontwheel drive shaft. Now if you have automatic hubs they could be stuck in the on position along with your 4X4 which will cause a ##### load of vibration. Ever try driving around town in 4X4 that's what happens!!

Could be a number of things. Bad u-joint in driveshaft, loose wheel bearings, bad hub, etc. Climb under it and grab the driveshaft. Try to move it back and forth and look for movement in the u-joint. Shouldn't be any. Check both shafts.

To check wheel bearings, jack up the front and then move the tires back and forth vertically. Should be zero play if good.

Could also be a tire out of balance. Take it to walmart and get them balanced for $5/ea.
