nv 4500

hello i was just wondering if a nv 4500 could be adapted to my 292. im looking for a 5 speed tranny for my 59 and have herd about this tranny and was wondering if it would work. i know its not a ford trannie but it sounds like this would be a much easier swap than a zf. what about the problems with 5th gear in the nv 4500. or is there a better transimission to swap in.

The NV4500 is a great tranny, much more stout than the zf. The "5th gear problem" is mostly myth, and only happens when being lugged (1200 to 1600 RPM) under load. There are several ways to prevent the problem, and most transmissions have the fix already installed.

The input shaft is interchangeable with several different models, you have to find one that matches the splines on the clutch disk you are using. You may have to ream out your pilot bushing in the end of the crankshaft, and, of course, you will need an adapter plate.

There are several companies that make these adapters - they are little more than a thick piece of aluminum plate drilled to match the ford pattern and the NV4500. You can get prices online.

are there any other 5 speeds i should consider. i want a fairly low first and strength but dont really care about the brand anymore. a external hydralic cluth or manual clutch so its easy to adapt. which brings up what kind of clutch does a nv 4500 have. thanks agian for answering all my silly questions.

I am no expert, and do not know how you will use your truck. If I was going with a 5-speed it would be the NV4500. But I don't see the real use in a 5 speed if you are running a gas engine - heavy transmissions were developed with lots of gears to match a heavy-duty diesel engine with a narrow operating band, such that it could develop the most power at whatever speed the truck was running.

Me, I would stick with the original T18 4 speed.

well i think the overdrive would be nice and i just like gears. ill be driving back and forth to school which is 16 miles away so it would be nice to have overdrive to help on gas and a five speed would just be cool

muscle cars and trucks should have stick shifts and that is all there is to it. it should be a law. driving a lot more fun when you have to pay attenion to traffic and signs while pushing in the cluth and reaching over to grab the shifter. the more gears the better too.

Keep talking like that and you'll win my vote! I HATE to see a sport car (especially) or an old truck with an automatic tranny. What a waste! It may look the same going down the road, but it doesn't drive the same...auto's just take all the fun out of it.

Family cars and plows are the only things that warrant an automatic. One so you can have an arm free to smack your kids, and the other to have a hand free to adjust the plow as you go.
