In read the old posts on this forum, I note that people have lots of complaints about the '83-86 glow plug system. Mine lasted from '86-04 (I've owned the truck since '87), when two glowplugs went bad. I had a new controller, so I replaced it at that time along with all the glow plugs, but the old one was still working. Was I just lucky?

No there are many others with the old ones working just fine, probably due to upkeep and cleanliness of all the wires etc. My guess would be your engine compartment is almost as clean as the day you got it. I could be wrong.......

It's very presentable but not like new. I'm not that AR!
I had an '83 Blazer with a 6.2L for 10 years and it had the same system on it. It was nothing BUT trouble. The Ford would start at 15 below, not plugged in. The Chevy... fugetaboutit at anything less 35 degrees and plugged in. I finally worked out some fixes for it, but not after being stranded with 8 fried glow plugs in places where I couldn't plug it in. It ate 3 starters in 10 years. The cure was some indestructible glow plugs from Kennedy diesel.
The starter on my '86, incidentally, is the original. This Ford lights instantly and always has.. usually on only one glow cycle, even in cold weather. That may be the reason for the good glowplug and starter service.

Hey jim, your starter, if I'm not mistaken, is the old AC Delco non-gear reduction. After I rebuilt mine 3 times in one year, I broke down and spent the $200 for the gear reduction style starter. Wow-what a world of difference. It was definitely money well spent.
