Toasted IDI?

I wanted to build a new 6.9 IDI but not this soon!

Friday afternoon, I started the the truck and it ran like crap....smoke pouring out of the passinger side of my dual exhaust ONLY....I thought I had a broken rocker arm....as the truck warmed up, it ran better, idled rough but ran well??

I thought it might be a clogged injector...so poured in the Diesel Kleen a couple bottles of [other] diesel additive, crossed my fingers & hoped for the best.

Started this morning [4:00 AM] with a cloud of smoke & the smell of diesel, ran well....I would run well if I had that much additive in me too...started this afternoon....smoke again pouring out the passinger side of the exhuast!

On the drive home I heard a strange knocking pinging sound, smoke poured out at [passinger side] at all revs...did not do this once it warmed up!!

So what do I do now?

I took apart a 7.3L that swallowed an exhaust valve and punched a hole through the piston smoked like a bear. Told the guy who it belonged to that it was a 1200 pound boat anchor since he ran it and things cascaded into a couple of bad cylinders. It was on the passenger side as I recall. Might be able to salvage it since it is a 6.9L I extend good luck to you.

Are you loosing coolant?
Are you loosing oil?
What color is the smoke?
What does it smell like?
Am I understanding the smoke still clears after the engine is warm?
Does the exhaust have a different odor after the engine is warm?

Hi Dave....I have no real idea of whats going on.

Driving home yesterday, the smoke got worse, did not clear up at all....the engine has really labours when cold, and a slight miss when warmed up....has a powerstroke ping to it on the passinger side?
To answer your questions
-no I'm not losing any coolant
-it smells like diesel
-the smoke is white-ish in colour
-I am using more oil than usual...3-4 quarts last 800 miles

Started the truck this morning...same thing, lots of smoke [passinger only]...15 minutes into my drive [stop & go traffic] smoke clears up, runs well....very slight miss but hardly noticable.

I get to work and I'm a happy man [?]....maybe it's a stuck, sticky, not working properly injector??

Same go around on the drive home....put in another 3 litres of Diesel Additive [that makes 6 litres in this tank] and I'll see if that helps?

So it possible that an injector will act like that?

If it was the IP, wouldn't I have smoke comming out of both sides of the exhaust?

At first, I thought it was a broken rocker arm, or dropped valve or a piston??

Loosen the injector lines on that side one by one and see if you can find the problem cylinder with it idling.

I think you have an injector that took a crap.
And it sounds like it is more than just stopped up, the Power Stroke rattle says it is either opening to early or not closing at all.
Sounds like the spring or pintle may have broken.

Wouldn't that be a huge relief to find that it's just an injector?

Mine just turned over 247,000. Still running like a champ.

if it's just an injector why is he going through a major amount of oil? I think you lost a valve or a rocker, in the early 6.9 heads there are bridges between the rockers that weren't so strong too, if you cant' find a bad injector then just take the valve cover off on the passenger side to see if you can find any type of problem there. it could be an easy fix right under the cover. I wish yout he best! I hate it when s*** like that happens!
