I have a stock 63 with a 223/I6. It is equipped with the original charging system. All was working fine till I removed the generator to paint the engine block. I cleaned up the generator, replaced the electical connections re-installed it now the generator light on the dash will not go out and the battery will not charge. What did I do or should do before re-installing?
Thanks in adavance
Greg
You may need to scrape the paint away from all the mounting bolts. It needs a good ground to the block. Also make sure any little grounding wires from the block to the sheetmetal do not have paint on them.
You need to excite the generator after cleaning the grounds If I remember correctly you arc the field post from the batt post while running. And all is well. Someone please correct me if that is the wrong terminals. But ya need to excite it after having it apart and banging it around.
To test it to see if it is bad. Remove the belt (and if grounded good) Jump from batt to batt post on Genny and it should motor. If it dose not turn like a motor with this test than it is bad. Be sure to disconnect regulator.
Follow the first reply before you try to ploarize the generator. From what i read you didn't take the generator apart so the residual magnetizm shouldn't be lost.
The ground thru thru the saddle will be interrupted by paint.
