Is there anything I should know besides what is in the Hayne's manual? Like if someone has done it and has run into a problem or knows an easier way etc. Hayne's manuals are not all that great.
Are you absolutely sure that the FP is your problem? There are quite a few horror stories about people putting new pumps in only to find out that the problem was much simpler like a relay, ignition switch, intertia switch.... etc.

I'm about 99% sure. The way it's been acting the last few days before it died, plus banged on the side of the tank and it started up.
If you were able to get the pump to kick in by smacking the tank, then it sounds like you are on the right track. Needless to say, once you get the tank down, make sure you have a good plug connection. On the 96, I think you have to drop the tank just to get to the connector. Make sure you have a decent ford fuel line removal tool. Good luck..
Well, it's done. It wouldn't have been too bad except that the hoses that come down from where you fill the gas are not connected to the tank with hose clamps like any others I have seen. There is some strange kind of connection. No one at any parts stores had any idea how to get them off and the Ford dealership refused to tell me. I just jacked up the rear of the truck as high as I possibly could and dropped the front of the tank to the ground with the filler hoses still connected so there was barely enough space to get the fuel pump out.
Another classic example of why I don't like Hayne's manuals- it says "loosen the hose clamps and disconnect the fuel filler and vent hose at the fuel tank" Actually what I dislike about them the most is all the things they leave out.

You're right about the Haynes and Chilton manuals - they stink. Go to ebay and get a Ford factory manual on CD-ROM. There are usually a bunch of them offered for sale, and generally don't cost much more than a Haynes manual. That's where I got mine a few years ago.
