power window quit working

I have a windstar van that the drivers side window quit working (this is the only one that doesn't work). I have checked to see if it has voltage to the motor. I checked it with the wire still connected and it got voltage for a breif second or two and then back to zero. If I disconnect the wire and check it, it has 14.3 volts constant as long as I hold the switch in the up or down position. One wire has voltage in the up position and the other wire has voltage in the down position.

Does this sound like the motor has died? The motor is externaly ground isn't it? Should I try grounding the motor before replacing the motor?

If you have a small battery charger, you can try using that and see if the motor will move.

The power and ground goes to the two wires you have been testing. The switching in the door puts ground on one wire, and + on the other to make the motor turn one way. When the switch in the door is moved the opposite direction, the ground is moved to the other wire and the + to the one that was ground before. So there really is no consistent "ground" to the motor like you would normally think. It is grounded, but the ground moves from one wire to the other.

So to check for voltage should I not ground my multimeter to the door and instead place both probes on the disconnnected wire connector. When I checked for voltage I just grounded the meter to the door and used the postive probe to check each wire on the connector for voltage. Thanks for the help Franklin.

I almost sure the motor is bad but I'll double check the voltage and try using a battery charger to verify the motor is bad.

Yes, put each probe on one of the wires to check it. If you can, try to check for voltage while the motor is still hooked up.

Okay I'll try that, I have some needles with aligator clips I can attach to the meter and check the voltage. I post back the results. Thanks again.

I checked the voltage with the wire still connnected and I only get voltage for about a second and then it goes to zero. If I unplug the connection and check it (with both leads connected to the connector) it goes from 13.6 to -13.6. depending on which way the switch is postioned.

I tried hooking up a battery charger to the motor directly and it wouldn't do anything. It didn't matter which way I hooked up the connections.

Looks like it is time for a new motor!
