Well, the leak is on my Dad's 2001 F150 Reg cab SB w/4.2 auto. I'm doing the troubleshooting over the phone from 300 miles away, so here is everything I know:
Puddle on the ground about even with the rear of the left front tire and 12"-18" in.
No excess smoke out the tailpipe.
Running fine.
What are the "common" leak areas? Just trying to make sure he doesn't hydrolock the motor. Thanks.
That much coolant on the ground i'de say it's the timing cover gasket.Get a flashlight and turn the wheels all the way to the right (I think....it's been awhile) and shine the light at the timing cover. You might see coolant leaking from the timing cover.
If not there look for a stream flowing from where the left head meets the block.Or,the weep holes on the water pump can leak too, meaning the water pump is bad.
I wish I was close enough to be able to go take a look and unfortunately the "old man" isn't quite able to get under the truck and see where it's coming from. He took it in yesterday, so I'll let you know what they find.
Yes he definately does NOT want hydrolock. Voice of experiance!!! Even though I was losing most of my coolant in the cylinder, I also have a core/freeze plug that is leaking (rust) coolant by it? Not enough to leave a puddle, but enough to see on the ground. Guess we'll all find out soon enough...
I read about your hydroock issue. I guess the good news is that your motor didn't actually "lock". I think that leaves you a few more options. I'm very surprised it would still run with a bent rod. You might want to do a deeper diagnosis before you dump lots of time and money into it. Maybe you'll get lucky.
