In gear engine stall

I've got a 73' F-100 with a 302 2bbl swap. I just rebuilt this and have had carb problems...but I got to drive it around the block once since the rebuild. ANyway, I rebuilt the carb and slapped that back on, now it purrs. My problem is this, I put the truck in gear (automatic) and it dies. I can't put it in drive yet, as I don't want it to die while it rolls into the middle of the street (it's parked on a slight slope). Any ideas will help.
BTW, I've replaced the vacuum modulator on the transmission. Could it be vacuum or fluid?

Sounds to me like a possible vacuum leak. Check all the vacuum lines, and if all else fails, spray a little starter fluid around the base of the carb and vacuum fittings, and if the engine revs up, you found your problem.

I had a similiar incident; with my engine after rebuild, (1976 302 installed in a 1965 F100). My problem was the coil. I fail to exchange it out from and unknown engine, that wasn't running when I bought it, and after rebuild, I thought it was needing a stall torque convertor, and all that was my problem was a weak old coil.
Just to add to your trouble shooting though.

Solved!

Well, I put it in first and gunned it, voila! It went well. Went around the block and then when I pulled back in my culdesac, I put it in reverse and it was fine. Who knows now what it may be...for now it alright though. Thanks again for all the help!
P.S. I will replace my coil as well...since I didn't the first time round.

Glad to hear you took a chance/test drive. Another thought could just be you idle speed on your carb is alittle low.
