A friend of mine tells me that I would be better off with lockout hubs. From what he tells me the front axels and driveshaft don't disengage their always spinning. Sounds to me like this could save me some wear and tear and gas mileage. Has anybody here changed them over? he say's there is a kit you can buy.
I'm sure what he's talking about is replacing the automatic hubs with manual ones. Even with auto hubs, the front drivetrain isn't always engaged though. However, auto's seem to be much more prone to problems than manuals. If you have automatic hubs, and are having problems with them, the change to manuals is highly recommended by most people here. If you're not really having problems, but just going by what your friend said, I wouldn't worry about it. It's a pretty easy thing to check. Make sure you are NOT in 4X4, drive the vehicle slowly forward and backward, and have someone look to see if the front driveshaft is turning. If it doesn't turn, good news. If it does turn, bad news. You will want to drive it for several feet each direction when you check because auto hubs can take a while to engage, especially when changing direction.
So what your saying is that when I put it in 2 high the front driveshaft and axle disengage and stop spinning. When their bad they don't disengage. I guess that's what I get when I listen to someone that drives a Chevy
When automatic hubs are bad they can do any number of things including not disengaging when they're supposed to. They can also not engage when you need them to.
