largest tires
After the Firestone fiasco, some tire shops won't even consider putting anything other than the OEM 235/75/15's. If you have a tire shop that will work with you, the usual answer for the biggest on a stock 1st gen is 31/10.50/15 or 265/75/15. I currently have 31/10.50/15 Dunlop Mud Rovers on my '92 and they fit fine. I get a little bit of rubbing on the plastic wheel well when turning as the suspension compresses, but it's tolerable. I would also rub on the sway bar at full left/right turn, if the front sway bar were installed.
