got a new trailer last weekend, a 6x10 haulmark. going to use mainly for my wife's craft shows. thinking of equiping the taurus as a second tow vehicle, the taurus is rated at 2,000 towing max, the trailer is 1040 empty. as long as i dont go over 2,000 i should be o.k. going to weigh it when i load it to see how much it will be before i try it out. has anyone pulled with a taurus sedan before? im thinking i need to get a small van if im going to pull it much with the car, they were never known for long trans life, anyhow heres a picture, i know i ned a lower ball mount to level the trailer to the truck, i hooked up to it on a unlevel gravel lot, didnt know it wa that far off until later.
you'll be fine with the taurus. That chassis is good for 3500 lbs. They just didnt want to warranty it for more than the 2000 lbs. If your gonna go over the 2000 lbs. you def want the trailer to have brake on the taurus though. I am not sure, with that size trailer i think they are only optional. What kinda crafts? Heavy things? or just bulky?
If you tow with the taurus, invest in a $60 tranny cooler. And of course use common sense when towing.
I beg to differ. Blow the transaxle in a Taurus, and you will quickly find that it is cheaper to replace the car itself than the transaxle.
I wouldn't tow a bag of POPCORN with a Taurus! I have a fine station wagon in my front yard that I am going to strip the leather seats and the 3.8 V6 out of as the only useful parts of it.
That transmission is the worst mistake FORD ever made.
But don't just take my word for that. Look up what it costs to replace or repair independantly and decide for yourself.

Like you said it all depends on what it weighs loaded. I think your on the right track and get it weighed loaded and go from there. The Tarus will handle the weight but like Cougar all ready said trans temp is the number one killer of an auto trans. Drive it easy and take care of it shouldn''t be a problem .
Arizona highway patrol bought some Taurus SHO's. Burned up the trannys in all of them. The weight may be within limits but you also have frontal area that will cause some drag.
plus the s.h.o. version is only rated at about 1,000 pnds towing. (at least in '93-the year of my taurus) i think as long as i dont use overdrive and limit speed to 45 i should be o.k. im thining of seeing what room i have between the grille and a/c equipment for a small auxilarry cooler, saw in my summit book where i can get a trans temp guage, that might be a good idea too.
The taurus is a fine car the down fall is with the cooling on the trans axle, i have own SHO and a few taurus the vulcan 3.0 and 3.8 are junk. the durtec and the yamaha 3.4 liter v-8 was a good engine as long as you fix the cam failure before it happen, so if you tow with the taurus i recommend getting a trans cooler and install in front of the radiator, at the bottom. i know i fix a SHO and resale it. i install a extra trans cooler becasue the factory set up is junk. you will prolong the life of the transaxle by more the half..
i know the sho and taurus like the back of my hand.
just a note on the SHO - I had one for 2 years in college. I abused it heavily and it never let me down. I could make a mustang gt look pretty bad. I ran back and forth between tx and mt with it running many miles well over 100mph (got a couple tickets to prove it) I have a very hard time believing the az hp burned up all of them, maybe one fluke deal, but I still to this day cant believe how hard I was on that car without any problems. I sold it with 130,000 miles on it - went back to a pickup!
My sister used a 97 taurus with the 3.0 to pull a u-haul about the size of your trailer, maybe a bit smaller. Pulled it from ohio to Idaho in OD the whole time. By the time she got here, OD didn't work anymore. Lucky for her the car was still under warranty and ford replaced it. I'm not sure why, I guess no one noticed the homemade class III hitch welded to the frame and put 2 and 2 together. The dang hitch sticks out so far, I had to remove the reciever to fit it in my garage to work on it.
yeah frod just ran a tube with fins across the front on the bottom of the car, it was a **** poor idea, for the atx, so in the sho forums they went and bought a extra cooler and install on the car to cool the fulid more, i know mine drop about 20% to 25% cooler then the factory design. the cooler cost about 40.00 dollars, and it saved me thousands in the long run, now the atx in the 96 and up gen 3 models they are all eletronic and they have 3 sel's that control. the speeds, and od.
