I am sure you guys have had this question before but I need to know what years of bronco had the solid axle and what years had the twin I-beam. I am looking at buying a 79 bronco. It may need a new transfercase. Is there a website that will tell me info like what transfer case it has what transmission stuff like that.
A 79 would probably have either a 351m or 400 engine unless someone swapped in something else and the would most likely be a 429 or 460. I think there were three different transfers used. A 203, 205 and maybe a 208. Depending on which it has the others could be used, but would usually entail changing tail piece on the tranny and maybe different length drive shafts. I switched my 78 from a 203 to a 205, but it was easier because I also changed the tranny that the 205 was attached to and had the extra drive shafts.
Thanks guys for the info. Is there any perticular places that I need to check for problems. Thanks again for the info this forum has been very helpfull.
The 205 is a gear driven transfer and is supposed to be stronger than the other two, but it is my understanding it isn't gear quite as low in the low range. The other two are chain driven. I'm no expert, so other folks probably have better information. I would guess that transfer cases out of a lot of f150 4x4's from 73-79 would interchange and maybe other years as well and some f250's also. Check the transmission etc forum and maybe someone can steer you to how to identify what you have. Also, a lot of guys on the off road forum would be familiar with the different transfer cases. Good Luck
